Top 5 clubs with the most La Liga titles in history
A slim 2-1 lead over Valladolid was enough for Atletico to secure three points on the last day of La Liga, earning them their first league title since the 2013-14 season. They had to win to be sure of the top spot in the table, which was made possible by a goal from Suarez in the 67e minute. We look at the teams that have won the most La Liga trophies in the history of the competition.
1) Real Madrid – 34 titles
Real Madrid are the most successful team in Spanish and European elite history, having won 34 La Liga titles to date, the most of any club in the league. Los Blancos have been a dominant force in Spain since winning the league title for the first time in 1931/32, with their last victory coming in 2019/20.
2) Barcelona – 26 titles
Rivals of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona are the second most decorated team in the country. Currently, with a total of 26, their last title win dates back to two seasons in 2018/19. Their very first La Liga took place in 1929 before the start of the Real Madrid era.
3) Atletico Madrid – 11 titles
Atletico Madrid have recently established themselves as one of the strongest teams in Europe and a formidable obstacle on the way to Real Madrid and Barcelona in their quest for La Liga. This season’s champions have won the trophy 11 times in their history, the first of which was 1939/40.
4) Athletic Club – 8 titles
Athletic Club, although they have fallen out of favor in terms of league titles in recent years, remain in the top spot in the league, as shown by their eight titles. The club, which is known to only feature players from the Basque region and origins, last won the league in 1983/84.
5) Valence – 6 titles
Valencia have been a considerably strong team over the years and were particularly strong in the early 2000s when they won two league titles. Their most recent La Liga title dates back to 2003/04 and their first in 1941/42.
