Real Madrid take on Barcelona for Aymeric Laporte
Real Madrid have reportedly joined Barcelona in the race to secure the transfer of Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte in the summer window.
According to a Transfer Market Web report, rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to go head-to-head for the signing of Manchester City star Aymeric Laporte in the next transfer window.
Laporte made his name in La Liga with Athletic Bilbao, making more than 200 appearances for the Basque Country side before signing for Manchester City in January 2018. The 27-year-old quickly established himself as a regular of the configuration of Pep Guardiola, playing an essential role. in their Premier League title triumphs in 2017/18 and 2018/19.
To date, Laporte has racked up 111 appearances for Cityzens, even contributing with eight goals and three assists. However, this latest campaign saw center-back falling behind John Stones and Ruben Dias, who was named Premier League player of the season. Indeed, he only participated in 27 matches in all competitions in 2020/21, starting just 14 matches in the top flight.
This has led to speculation about his future at the Etihad Stadium, especially with Manchester City reportedly looking for a new center-back. And that sparked interest from two of the biggest clubs in the world Barcelona and Real Madrid, both looking for reinforcements at the back.
Barcelona’s interest in Laporte is quite understandable given that Gerard Pique is in the final stage of his career while Samuel Umtiti and Clement Lenglet face an uncertain future at Camp Nou. While the Catalan giants have signed a defender in Eric Garcia on a free transfer from Manchester City, there would still be a lack of experience at the back as well as the shortage of a left-handed center-back at the back.
This is something Barcelona can resolve with the signing of Laporte, who has a proven track record in La Liga as well as the Premier League, while also gaining title experience at the Etihad. However, the Blaugrana could now face stiff competition from fierce rivals Real Madrid for the signing of the Spain international at some point.
Like Barcelona, Real Madrid also have to replace a seasoned veteran of captain Sergio Ramos, who is out of contract at the club in a few weeks and, interestingly, has been linked with Manchester City. In addition, Raphael Varane is also aiming for a summer exit from the Santiago Bernabeu, which would leave new manager Carlo Ancelotti without the club’s oldest center-backs.

So even if David Alaba signed from Bayern Munich for a transfer from Bosman, another defender would be worth the investment for Los Blancos. Laporte, to that end, would be a viable transfer target for the Spanish capital club.
The report adds that Manchester City are said to be ready to cash the 27-year-old if an offer of € 50million arises. It now remains to be seen whether Barcelona or Real Madrid are ready to live up to this assessment or seek alternatives to bolster their respective defenses.
