Rayo-Betis and Athletic Bilbao-Valencia, the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey
The last draw of this edition of the Copa del Rey caused the confrontation between the Rayo-Betis and Athletic Bilbao-Valencia. This is the second time since the format was introduced three years ago that neither Real Madrid, Barcelona nor Atlético de Madrid have reached the semi-finals. The first legs will be played in Vallecas and San Mamés.
Rayo Vallecano, who will face Betis, lost their invincibility in the league in Vallecas after the defeat against Athletic Bilbao (0-1). However, in the Cup they continue without losing despite the very bad relationship between the board and the fans. Lower South fans had to enter without shirts at the stadium because the president, Raúl Martín Presa, indicated it. These disagreements, however, did not count for them to reach the semi-finals against Mallorca (1-0).
Betis will be your rival. Pellegrini’s team had a more peaceful game against Real Sociedad (0-4), who won comfortably thanks to goals from Juanmi (doubles), William José and Aitor Ruibal. The Verdiblancos, after the incidents that occurred during the derby of the round of 16 (2-1), faced, like last season, the team of Imanol Aguacil. Victory went to the Sevillians, who had already brought down the Donostiarras last year (3-1).
Athletic collect elephant heads
Athletic Bilbao have to their credit two heads of elephants, that of Madrid and that of Barcelona. Marcelino’s team eliminated Xavi’s team in the round of 16 (3-2) and Ancelotti’s in the quarter-finals (1-0). In the match against the culés there were more exchanges of blows, while against the whites there was a drop thanks to a good action by Berenguer. The winger crossed the ball perfectly so that Courtois didn’t reach it.
Valencia have been paired with Betis. Bordalás’ side, which gave him his mark, continue to improve after a year end where it was difficult for them to win games. The signing of Bryan Gil, who in his debut left a pipe similar to Aimar’s, was sweet. After eliminating Cadiz in the quarter-finals (2-1), now their goal is to win a tournament they won three years ago.
