Preview: Sevilla vs Athletic Bilbao
Sports Mole presents Monday’s La Liga game between Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao, including predictions, team news and possible line-ups.
Seville will look to earn six straight La Liga wins when they continue their 2020-21 home campaign for Athletic bilbao Monday evening.
Julen LopeteguiThe team are currently fourth in the standings, three points behind leaders Atletico Madrid in the same number of matches (33), while Athletic are in ninth place in the Spanish top flight.
Sevilla are still the underdogs in the title race, but there is no doubt that Lopetegui’s side are on the hunt as they approach the home stretch, just three points off the top.
Both Atletico and second-placed Real Madrid are in action on Saturday, while third-placed Barcelona will feature on Sunday, meaning the picture will likely have changed by the time this game kicks off.
Sevilla just need to keep winning and see where it takes them, and it would be an incredible story if they managed to win their first La Liga title since 1956-57.
Los Nervionenses have won seven of their last eight league games and each of their last five, including a 2-1 win over Granada last time, with Ivan Rakitic and Lucas Ocampos on the score sheet.
Lopetegui’s side have been impressive at home this term, scoring 37 points in their 16 league games at Estadio Ramon, and they will face an athletic team struggling to travel.
Athletic, meanwhile, will take part in Monday’s game after a 2-2 draw with struggling Real Valladolid on Wednesday night; the Basque club led until the 85th minute of the competition, when Shon weissman found the back of the net to make sure the points would be shared.
MarcelinoThe squad’s side also beat Atletico 2-1 last weekend, and a record 10 wins, 12 draws and 11 losses in 33 appearances this season saw them collect 42 points, leaving them at ninth place in the table.
Athletic are just three points behind eighth-placed Granada and will be desperate to end the season strong, having lost two Copa del Rey finals last month to Real Sociedad and Barcelona respectively.
The Lions, who finished 11th in La Liga last season, have recorded just two away wins in Spain’s top flight this season, suffering seven losses in the process, but they have lost just one of their last three league games with Sevilla and recorded a 2-1 win in the reverse game earlier this season.

Athletic Bilbao La Liga form:
Athletic Bilbao form (all competitions):
Sevilla could do without reserve goalkeeper services again Tomas vaclik through injury, but the home side are otherwise in excellent shape ahead of the match.
Lopetegui could make the only change to the squad that started against Granada last time around, with Youssef En-Nesyri, who is the team’s top scorer this season with 23, coming back to center-forward instead of Luuk de Jong.
Joan jordan and Oliver torres are part of the change options, but Suso should again retain its place in an attack point, while Papu gomez could again feature as part of a midfielder three.
As for the Athletic, Peru Nolaskoain, Iker Muniain, Yuri Berchiche and Ander Capa will again be missed by injury, but Unai Vencedor is available after a match ban.
There could be a change in the middle of the defense with Yeray Alvarez replace Unai Nunez, while Vencedor could replace Unai lopez in the central midfield.
Inaki williams and Raul garcia should come back in the bottom third of the pack, but Jon Morcillo could hold his place in a wide area, having found the back of the net against Valladolid the last time around.
Possible starting line-up for Seville:
Bounou; Navas, Kounde, Carlos, Acuna; Fernando, Rakitic, Gomez; Suso, En-Nesyri, Ocampos
Possible starting line-up from Athletic Bilbao:
Simon; From Marcos, Alvarez, Martinez, Balenziaga; Berenguer, D Garcia, Vencedor, Morcillo; Williams, R Garcia
We say: Sevilla 1-0 Athletic Bilbao
It’s potentially a very, very tricky game for Sevilla, who have to keep winning to stay in the title argument. The athletes are more than capable of a positive result in this game, but we just want the home side to face a close game, with En-Nesyri perhaps scoring the game-winning goal.
