‘Nothing to think about’ – Midfielder finds new club after Birmingham City exit
Mikel San Jose quickly found another team after shortening his time at Birmingham City.
The former Athletic Bilbao midfielder has only completed one of his two years with the Blues after deciding to return to Spain.
Arriving with the experience of 300 La Liga appearances under his belt, it was a largely disappointing stay for the 32-year-old, undermined by the demand to change positions in a struggling team and in the context of the high pace of the English league. .
Instead, he will be in the second Spanish tier this season after signing a one-year contract with newly promoted SD Amorebieta.
The Basque team reached the Segunda division for the first time in their history in the promotion play-offs at the end of last season.
They will play their matches at Athletic’s second ground, Lezama, as their traditional stadium does not follow league guidelines.
And San Jose, who also played for Liverpool and Spain in a long career, admitted he had “nothing to think about” when approached.
“The project and the challenge that this club has in front of it, being a Basque club and giving me the opportunity to be at home, could not in any way be matched,” he said.

“It’s very nice to be able to fight with people back home to maintain something and that can be sustainable. They have clearly shown that they can do great things and I have come to help make it a great year.
“In that aspect, we can rest easy knowing that the league is very long. The atmosphere is very good. There are people I already knew and can’t wait to get started,
“It would be much better to be able to play at Urritxe because of what it means for the club and for the people, but at Lezama the pitch will support us and people will come to see us. It will be very special.
San Jose made 27 appearances for the Blues last season, mostly in midfield although eight at center back where he struggled.
