! Murcia today – Spanish government postpones decision on relaxing face mask rules
Some regions in a rush to defuse themselves, but Andalusia warns of rising incidence rates in the region
There was a great sense of anticipation in Spain on Tuesday ahead of a meeting in which it was reported that the Health Ministry would discuss the possibility of partially relaxing the application of compulsory face masks in public places , but ultimately no. concrete news has emerged as to when this might become a feasible option.
The ministry limited itself to specifying that this relaxation of pandemic restrictions will depend on the progress of the vaccination campaign against the coronavirus and that it will in no case become a possibility before 50% of the population has been totally immune. Currently, the proportion stands at 27.4 percent, although it is expected that by the end of the week it will have passed 30 percent.
Fernando Simón, director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, explained that “we are waiting for the right time and it will come soon, but in any case we can not yet announce a specific date”. Vaccination projections suggest that the vaccination criterion for half the population will be met in July.
As always, approaches to introducing less stringent rules for face masks differ considerably among Spain’s 17 regional governments. Madrid is among the more cautious regional governments in this regard, as are Galicia and the Basque Country, although incidence rates are zero or very close to zero in many parts of Galicia.
On the other hand, Castilla-La Mancha has suggested a gradual de-escalation by municipalities according to local incidence rates, while demands have been made in Catalonia for the immediate removal of the obligation to wear masks. This opinion was also expressed by Ximo Puig, the president of the government of Valenica, while in the Region of Murcia, the Minister of Health advocated a lifting of the obligation from the beginning of July.
In Andalusia, however, the region with the highest Covid incidence rate at present, it is reported that the eagerness of those who have not yet been vaccinated to take the plunge and start withdrawing masks has led to an increase in infection, and the regional government supports maintaining masks except on beaches.
