Mauricio Pochettino a ‘shock candidate for the post of manager of Athletic Bilbao with the former chief of Tottenham in the face of the dismissal of PSG’
MAURICIO POCHETTINO has emerged as a tough managerial target for Athletic Bilbao, according to reports.
The former Tottenham manager is set to be relieved of his duties at Paris-Saint Germain after an end-of-season meeting last week.
This has led to speculation over where he might end up, with Bilbao providing him with the final potential destination.
However, that will depend on Ricardo Barkala being elected as club president of Athletic Bilbao.
Barkala wants to reunite Pochettino with former Spurs and Espanyol sporting director Ramon Planes at the club if elected, according to the Mail.
The Basque club, which only recruits players born in the Basque country or having cut their teeth there, will find themselves without a coach after separating from Marcelino who will join Valencia.
Pochettino himself is set to be replaced at PSG by former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.
Poch won the Ligue 1 title last season but also oversaw a disappointing Champions League campaign as they collapsed in the round of 16 against eventual champions Real Madrid.
Prior to Erik ten Hag’s appointment, Pochettino had also been widely linked with the vacancy at Manchester United.
The fate of the game on the Bilbao pitch will likely depend on the outcome of their presidential elections.

With Barkala the favorite to win, rival candidate Inaki Arechabaleta will nominate former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa if he is successful.
Elections to decide the club’s future will take place on June 24.
