Julen Agirrezabala on Real Madrid radar
Real Madrid are said to be following the progress of 21-year-old Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala with a view to signing him in the future.
According to a report from Spanish media Defensa Central, Julen Agirrezabala is the subject of Real Madrid’s interest in a possible transfer in a future transfer window. The 21-year-old Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper will be closely watched by Los Blancos this season, with a probable approach.
Julen Agirrezabala joined the Academy of Athletic Bilbao from amateur football club Antiguoko Kirol Elkartea in 2018. And in two years, the young goalkeeper had moved to the reserve team of the Basque club. After an impressive campaign with Bilbao Athletic, the young keeper was promoted to the first team at the start of the 2021/22 season.
In August, the 21-year-old made his first-team debut for Los Leones, and he amassed three more appearances for the club, keeping a clean sheet in the process. Agirrezabala’s progress since joining Athletic Bilbao’s first team has not gone unnoticed, with his performances catching the attention of Real Madrid.
The interest of Real Madrid is interesting but understandable. That’s because Andriy Lunin is unstable at the Santiago Bernabeu after failing to gain a foothold since arriving from Zorya Luhansk in July 2018.

The Ukrainian keeper has only made one appearance for Real Madrid in the past three years, embarking on loan spells at three different clubs in the same span. With Thibaut Courtois getting stronger as the seasons go by, Lunin’s fortunes are unlikely to improve. As a result, he could request a departure from the Santiago Bernabeu, with Newcastle United among the clubs interested in him.
If Lunin is sold, Real Madrid will have to bring in a replacement, although Diego Altube could be promoted to Courtois’ replacement. However, if the La Liga heavyweights decide to dip their toes in the transfer market, Agirrezabala could be a viable target if he continues on his upward trajectory for the remainder of the season.
There are other goalkeepers on Real Madrid’s radar as well, including Dani Cardenas, and Los Blancos will likely have a number of options to choose from before taking one last call to replace Lunin. As it stands, the 21-year-old will be under close scrutiny in the weeks and months to come. It remains to be seen if Real Madrid will seek to distance him from compatriot La Liga, Athletic Bilbao.
