BME and BBF Fintech organize a hackathon on sustainable finance
On June 25, 26 and 27, Bilbao will host the “Hack & Disrupt!” event, the first hackathon focused on the international fintech and insurtech sector that focuses on sustainable finance.
For two days, the gathering will bring together companies, entrepreneurs and startups to solve global technological challenges as a team. BME and BBF Fintech are the organizers of this event, which is sponsored by BBK, Plaza Financiera Bilbao and SIX’s startup accelerator, F10.
The objective of this event is to connect entrepreneurs and companies to reimagine finance and insurance through digitization. The real challenges that the participants will face are oriented towards innovation and sustainable finance. The event will take place in a hybrid format due to the pandemic, combining a face-to-face part, at BBF Bilbao Berrikuntza Faktoria, where all protective measures against Covid-19 will be followed, and an online part, through a platform technology, which will include different stands, chats and work rooms. The opening and closing ceremonies, as well as various panels related to the entrepreneurial world and the fintech and insurtech ecosystem, will be broadcast from the platform.
The event will start on Friday 25 at 5 p.m. Among others, the opening will be attended by Lander Beloki, Dean of the University of Mondragon; Ainara Basurko, regional deputy for economic promotion; Xabier Ochandiano, Advisor for Economic Development, Trade and Employment of the City of Bilbao, and Javier Hernani, CEO of BME, who will reflect on innovation in the securities markets. Then there will be a roundtable on sustainability.
Friday at 6 p.m. challenges will be presented and teams will start working on their resolution at 6.30 p.m. They will have until Sunday 27 at 11 a.m. On that day, at 6 p.m., the winners will be announced. On Saturday the 26th will take place the presentations of several experts, including Berta Ares, Managing Director of BME Inntech, and Manuel Ardanza, President of the Bilbao Stock Exchange.
The winners will be eligible for three prizes: a prospecting trip to Switzerland, where they will get to know in detail its fintech ecosystem, the possibility of participating in the incubation program and the open innovation program II of BBF Fintech, the private fintech incubator. promoted by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the City Hall of Bilbao, the University of Mondragón and Dominion, as well as direct access to the final interview to participate in the F10 incubation and acceleration program.
Javier Hernani, CEO of BME, believes that BME’s presence at this event reaffirms the company’s commitment to digitization, innovation and the promotion of SMEs and disruptive startups, which adds to other initiatives, such as the pre-market environment. “The startups of today can be the blue chips of tomorrow,” he said. “We also reiterate our support for Bilbao as an innovative financial center, where BME closely follows the entrepreneurial ecosystem,” he added.
