Bayern Munich alumni: Javi Martinez rumors persist with Athletic Bilbao
In a move that many have been waiting for, former Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez is reportedly in talks with his home club Athletic Bilbao over a return.
According to Spanish media El Correo, Martinez could return to Spain for the next (latest?) stage of his career. The news was captured by Goal reporter Ronan Murphy, who cited another AS report and posted this tweet:
Athletic Club are considering offering Javi Martinez a two-year contract after his contract with Bayern Munich expires, according to as. #FCBayern

Based on his performances over the past two seasons, it’s clear that Martinez still has a lot to offer a club as a defensive midfielder or even as a center-back. Martinez still has the instinct, the leadership and the skills to perform at a high level. Although he slowed down a bit, Martinez would likely still be a starting caliber player at a club like Athletic Bilbao, even if he was stuck on the bench at Bayern Munich.
The 32-year-old could take some time to make his final decision, but it looks like his rumored return to Bilbao could happen. Martinez, of course, moved to Bayern Munich from Athletic Bilbao in 2012.
