Barcelona terminate Braithwaite’s contract as much-maligned striker nears Espanyol move
Barcelona have confirmed that Martin Braithwaite’s contract has been terminated by mutual agreement.
- Braithwaite freed by La Liga
- The forward has made 58 appearances for Barca
- He joins Espanyol for three years
WHAT HAPPENED? Braithwaite’s time at Camp Nou ended almost two years ahead of schedule. He’s now signed for Espanyol on a free transfer.
THE BIGGEST PICTURE: Braithwaite arrived at Barca under bizarre circumstances, receiving special dispensation to sign from Leganes in February 2020 due to the club’s injury crisis. He scored a few important goals afterwards but was recently mocked by fans after apparently refusing to take a pay cut.
WHAT THEY SAID: “FC Barcelona and player Martin Braithwaite have reached an agreement for the release of the contract that the player had with the Club until the end of the 2023/24 season,” reads a statement from the club. “FC Barcelona publicly expresses his gratitude to Braithwaite for his commitment and dedication and wishes him good luck and success in the future.”
