Barcelona striker on loan was offered to Real Sociedad, salary became an obstacle
Despite recent statements from Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and president Enrique Cerezo, the club have been reluctant to keep Barcelona striker Antoine Griezmann on loan at Civitas Metropolitano.
The Frenchman’s salary is a burden for the Rojiblancos, which has had problems with player registration this season. On top of that, they are reluctant to shell out the mandatory €40m fee to sign the 31-year-old permanently next summer.
In accordance with the agreement with Barça, the Colchoneros will have to sign him permanently if he plays 45 minutes or more in 50% of the matches for which he is available. To avoid this, Atletico have played Griezmann for less than thirty minutes in each of the three La Liga games this season.
The Frenchman isn’t entirely happy with his situation and in the midst of that, Mundo Deportivo now reports that he was offered to his former club Real Sociedad in the summer.
Griezmann made a name for himself with the Basque Country side before earning superstar status at Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. The Real fans have been dreaming of the striker’s return to Anoeta and it could have come to fruition this summer according to the report.
It is believed that Griezmann was offered to Sociedad, who could have signed him for less than the €40m Atletico Madrid have to pay Barcelona.
However, according to the report, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner’s salary was a major hurdle in securing the deal. The 31-year-old earns around €10m a year, more than triple what Real Sociedad’s highest-paid player pockets.
Thus, it was simply not possible for the Basque club to incorporate such huge salaries on their payroll, thus ruling out the possible return of Griezmann.
With the transfer window almost over, Griezmann will stay at Atletico Madrid as things stand. And Barcelona are said to be relaxed about their situation despite Los Rojiblancos’ tactics to avoid paying the €40m fee for his permanent transfer.
