Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelino worries about players after missing out on Europe

Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelino felt concerned for the players after the loss to Sevilla in the final game of the season.
Athletic Club’s dreams of qualifying for the Europa Conference League came to an end on Sunday night as the 1-0 loss to Sevilla coupled with Villarreal’s win over FC Barcelona means the Lions have completed the 2021/22 campaign of LaLiga in eighth place.
“The players deserved it, they performed well and improved throughout the season. We just didn’t get enough points,” Marcelino said after the game in Sevilla.
“I am proud and satisfied with the way this team has worked this season. But there are seven teams that have won more points than us. Even though our overall numbers were good, I’m sure they could have been better.”
A second-half strike from Rafa Mir saw Athletic fall to a 1-0 defeat. Marcelino said Sevilla ‘were the better team overall and the result was fair’.
He continued: “We had clear chances to take the lead in the first half, and especially with Iñaki Williams hitting the post early in the second half, but the ball didn’t go in.
“We have been lacking goals this season, especially away from San Mamés, and that has punished us a lot.”
